Hannibal Barca — known as Hanibaal in Phoenician, meaning "Grace of Baal" — was born in Carthage, the great city founded by Lebanese Phoenician Princess Elissa. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest military commanders in all of human history.
In 218 BC, he led his army — including war elephants — on an audacious march from Spain, across the Pyrenees, through the Alps, and into the heart of Italy. He crushed the Roman legions at the battles of Trebia, Lake Trasimene, and the legendary Battle of Cannae — one of the most decisive military victories ever recorded, studied in military academies to this day.
